Red Light Citations in Jacksonville Today

Jacksonville shut down its red light camera program at the end of 2017 when the city’s vendor contract expired and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office chose not to renew it. The cameras were removed, and as of 2024, no municipality in the Jacksonville area outside of two smaller Clay County towns operates automated camera enforcement. That distinction matters because camera-based and officer-issued citations work very differently.

Under Florida’s Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Program, a camera-issued Notice of Violation is mailed to a vehicle’s registered owner as a civil penalty and generally carries no points if paid before it escalates into a Uniform Traffic Citation. An officer-issued red light citation is a moving violation charged directly under Florida Statute 316.074(1) or 316.075(1)(c)1, and the consequences are more serious.

Points, Fines, and Insurance After a Florida Red Light Ticket

An officer-issued red light violation carries 4 points under the Florida DHSMV point system. Those points stay on your driving record and can affect your standing in several ways:

  • License suspension thresholds: Florida suspends driving privileges after 12 points within 12 months, 18 points within 18 months, or 24 points within 36 months
  • Insurance premiums: A moving violation on your record can lead to increased auto insurance rates for several years
  • Traffic school election: Florida drivers may elect a Basic Driver Improvement course to withhold points from a qualifying ticket, but this option is limited to once every 12 months with a lifetime cap on total elections

Electing traffic school withholds adjudication, so no points are added. But it uses one of your lifetime elections and doesn’t reduce the fine itself. Whether that trade-off makes sense depends on your record and your circumstances.

Your Options After a Duval County Red Light Citation

Citations issued in Duval County must be addressed within 30 calendar days of the issue date. Missing that deadline can result in a license suspension for non-response, separate from any consequences tied to the violation itself. The Duval County Clerk of Courts’ Traffic Violations Bureau processes civil and criminal traffic citations issued within the county and handles the response process.

Once you have a citation in hand, three paths are available:

  • Pay the fine and accept the points: Treated as an admission of guilt, resulting in a conviction and 4 points added to your license
  • Pay and elect traffic school: Withholds adjudication and keeps points off your record if you complete the course, but uses one of your lifetime elections
  • Contest the citation: Request a hearing before a judge in Duval County traffic court, where the citation can be challenged on its merits

One detail many drivers don’t know: Florida doesn’t allow a civil traffic citation to be expunged or sealed once issued. Even a dismissed ticket remains visible on your Florida driving record, though it carries no points or penalties. When contesting, the goal is dismissal or reduction, not erasure.

How We Approach Red Light Ticket Defense

Before recommending any strategy, we evaluate the specific circumstances of your citation. The issuing officer’s observations, the conditions at the intersection, and the precise language of the charge under Florida Statute 316.074 or 316.075 all matter. Defenses that apply in one case won’t apply in another, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach often leaves drivers worse off.

We can request an administrative hearing or appear in Duval County traffic court on your behalf. In many cases, our clients don’t need to appear at all. For citations that proceed to a contested hearing, we bring the same trial-tested experience we apply to criminal defense matters. No outcome is guaranteed, but having an attorney in your corner can provide a meaningful advantage over paying the ticket outright and accepting the consequences.
